SAD NEWS
Members of Saundersfoot Bowling Club have been saddened to hear of the passing of Kay Kennion and Steve Arris.Kay, a former captain of Saundersfoot Ladies, was a keen bowler and supported the club both on and off the green. Under Kay’s captaincy, the Saundersfoot Ladies won the Pembrokeshire League and their photograph, with Kay holding the shield, hangs proudly in the gallery of pictures. More recently, she also won the county rinks competition with Beryl Lawrence, Audrey Williams and Lyn Statters. All the lady members were delighted last summer when club captain Diane Rigden presented Kay with the Captain’s Shield for her courageous fight and bravery which was admired by everyone, for which she received a standing ovation.A minute’s silence was held to remember Kay, her husband Roy and their family at the fund-raising supper on Friday evening.Prior to the friendly on Sunday, both Saundersfoot and Kidwelly bowlers stood for a moment to remember Kay and Steve Arris, who has also sadly passed away.Steve, also a past Saundersfoot captain, was a popular member of the club, and will be remembered by many for wearing his faithful straw hat adorned with countless bowling club badges, which always provoked much interest with his opponents.Sympathy is extended to Steve’s wife Dot and their family.
Fund-raising supper
Saundersfoot Bowling Club echoed to the sounds of much laughter on Friday evening as a large turnout enjoyed the fund-raising supper.A tasty meal of sausage, mash and onion gravy was served, followed by two Dutch auctions, raffle and quizzes. Many thanks to Ann, Gloria and their helpers for organising the evening, which was another financial success for the club.
Membership subscriptions
There are still a few membership subscriptions outstanding. Although treasurer, George Cavell, is in hospital, Mary is happy to accept them on his behalf.
John Badham Shield
The first of the club’s internal competitions, the John Badham Shield, takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 3.This singles round-robin event has not been held for a few years, so it is hoped that bringing it forward in the club’s calendar of events, plus a fine day, will ensure it is played. There is a list on the noticeboard for those interested in playing. Closing date is Saturday, May 1.All the other club competition sheets are also on the noticeboard. Closing date is May 16.
First league games
Tomorrow (Saturday), Saundersfoot men, captained by Steve Dick, play their first Division One league game away to Carruthers Shield holders, Tenby, while Barry Lee and his St. Issell’s boys entertain Pembroke Dock Mariners in Division Two. Both games start at 2 pm.
ESME AND JOHN BADHAM SHIELD
The club singles competition for the Esme and John Badham Shield took place at the Saundersfoot green on a sunny, but chilly Bank Holiday Monday. After the round robin games in the morning, the group winners played at the semi-final stage after lunch with Joe Dennis coming out on top against Nev Ruff after an extra end and Marion Evans defeating Sue Roden .In the final, Marion just piped Joe by one shot in a thrilling game to win the event for the first time. The shield, plus prizes, were presented by tournament organiser Paul Blayney.
